Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.
Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes are granted the right to question certain rulings from the chair umpire, following the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other situations, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
